Shamuktala police arrested Trinamool Congress regional president Bishnu Roy and Malda resident Sanjay Mandal with 52 grams of brown sugar during a late-night raid in Alipurduar’s Majhirdabari area. Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended the duo in front of the Trinamool party office and seized the narcotics. Both were taken into custody and booked under the NDPS Act.
Following the arrest, police conducted an overnight search at Bishnu Roy’s residence, where additional narcotics were allegedly found. Roy, a fourth-grade hospital employee, serves as the regional president of Trinamool’s Majhirdabari (West) unit, while his wife, Lipika Roy, is a Panchayat member. Authorities suspect links between Mandal, a known drug dealer from Malda’s Kaliachak, and Roy, as intelligence reports indicated a meeting between them at the leader’s residence.
The incident has caused a stir in the area, prompting further investigations. A large police team remains deployed, and officials are questioning the accused to determine the extent of their involvement in the narcotics trade. BJP district leaders have demanded a deeper probe, claiming that a wider drug network may be operating in the region.
