Toxic Chinese Abir floods Kolkata markets; Police crack down before Holi

Ahead of Holi, Kolkata Police and intelligence agencies are keeping a close watch on the sale of cheap Chinese Abir in Kolkata and other parts of the state. According to intelligence sources, these illegally smuggled Abirs from China are suspected to contain harmful chemicals that could pose a threat to health and the environment.

Every year, the sale of Abir and colors surges before Holi and Dol Utsav. These products are widely available in large markets, shops, and temporary roadside stalls. According to intelligence reports, some Indian trading companies legally import high-quality Abir and colors from China. However, the concern is over cheap Chinese Abir, which is being smuggled into Kolkata’s major markets through Nepal, North Bengal, and Bihar. Sources indicate that some traders in major commercial areas of Kolkata, particularly in Burrabazar, have stockpiled these cheap Chinese Abirs. Some of them are mixed with domestically produced Abir, while others are separately packed and sold in the market.

Experts suggest that low-cost Chinese Abir is mostly made of synthetic colors containing harmful chemicals like talcum powder, lead, and mercury. The red, pink, and blue Abirs are found to have higher concentrations of these chemicals, which can cause skin and eye irritation. Additionally, when dispersed in the air, these chemicals may lead to respiratory diseases.

According to intelligence sources, these Chinese Abirs are significantly cheaper than locally produced ones. While Indian Abir is priced between ₹60 and ₹120 per kg, Chinese Abir is available for just ₹30 to ₹50 per kg. This price difference makes it a lucrative deal for traders, leading to its widespread purchase.

To curb the sale of these cheap Chinese Abirs, Kolkata Police and intelligence agencies are taking strict action. Special surveillance is being maintained over warehouses in Burrabazar and other areas. According to the police, these Abirs are usually stored in large sacks, and if needed, samples can be sent for laboratory testing.
