Two arrested for spreading fake news on Uccha Madhyamik; 1,000 SIMs seized

Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station has arrested two individuals for allegedly spreading confusion among candidates appearing for the Higher Secondary (HS) Exam 2025. The accused were reportedly using social media to create panic and mislead students. Police sources revealed that a significant number of mobile phones, SIM cards, and cash were recovered from them.

According to officials, the accused were actively circulating false messages and videos with the intention of defaming the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) and the state government. Acting on a formal complaint filed by the board, the police launched an investigation that led to the arrests. In the operation, officers seized 1,000 SIM cards, 74 mobile phones, and cash amounting to one lakh rupees.

The ongoing HS Exam, which started on March 3 and will conclude on March 18, is the last one under the existing system. This year, the number of candidates has dropped significantly, with around 2.8 lakh fewer students appearing compared to the previous year. More than 55,000 registered students have opted out of the exam. To prevent malpractices, strict security measures have been implemented, including the inclusion of exam center names on admit cards, the installation of metal detectors, and at least two CCTV cameras at each venue. Additionally, question packets are now opened in front of candidates, and anyone caught using a mobile phone inside the center faces exam cancellation. From next year, the HS Exam will be conducted in two semesters.

Meanwhile, incidents of cheating in the Madhyamik exam have also come to light. Last month, a student from Baratola High School was caught using an AI-powered application to cheat during the mathematics exam at Badartola High School in Metiaburuj. The student had taken a photo of the question paper and used an AI app to generate answers. Upon discovery, the student’s exam was immediately canceled.

In total, 19 students were caught using mobile phones and smartwatches during this year’s Madhyamik exam. The education board has assured strict monitoring to curb such incidents in future exams.
