TMC issues final warning to Humayun Kabir over controversial remarks, sets clear conditions for future conduct

TMC legislator from Bharatpur, Murshidabad, Humayun Kabir has been given a final warning by the TMC's Parliamentary Discipline Committee for his controversial remarks. On Tuesday, the committee called him in. Humayun appeared before the committee and explained his comments. The committee's chairperson and parliamentary minister, Sovandeb Chatterjee, stated that Humayun has been instructed to follow the party's discipline and principles. He must adhere to three conditions.

Humayun's repeated offhand remarks had angered TMC's top leadership. While protesting the opposition leader's anti-minority comments, Humayun said, "For me, my community comes first, then the party. If my community is attacked, I will not stay silent." The party did not approve of this remark. Last Thursday, Sovandeb Chatterjee, the chairperson of the Legislative Assembly's TMC Discipline Committee, issued a show-cause notice to him. Humayun responded to the letter on Saturday but did not apologize for his statement.

On Monday, Sovandeb Chatterjee, Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas, Chandrima Bhattacharya, and other members of the Discipline Committee met to discuss his response. None of them were satisfied with his reply. After the meeting, Sovandeb said, "Every political party has some principles. Humayun has been repeatedly making statements that are against the party's principles. What he said is his personal matter, but as an MLA, he cannot make such remarks. His response to the show-cause notice was not satisfactory. He has been called in today."

Humayun appeared before the committee and provided an explanation for his comments. While he did not share details with the media after leaving, he mentioned that the discussion went well, and he was given an opportunity to speak. He was also advised. Sovandeb Chatterjee said that Humayun has been instructed not to make any unconstitutional or controversial comments that would embarrass the party in the future. He must refrain from making communal remarks from a constitutional position and should communicate any concerns within the party. Humayun has promised to follow these three conditions set by the party.
