The Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Lucknow Super Giants IPL 2025 match, originally scheduled for April 6 at Eden Gardens, has been moved to Guwahati due to security concerns. The Kolkata Police informed the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) that it would be unable to provide adequate security for the match, which coincides with Ram Navami celebrations. CAB President Snehasish Ganguly confirmed, "We have informed the BCCI, and the match is being moved to Guwahati. There was no scope for rescheduling in Kolkata later." The Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, already hosting two IPL matches this season, will now accommodate this fixture.
The decision follows a similar issue in IPL 2024 when a KKR match against Rajasthan Royals had to be rescheduled due to the same security concerns. "I had several rounds of talks with the Kolkata Police, and they said they won't be able to provide enough security on that day," Ganguly had said earlier. With Eden Gardens having a capacity of 65,000, officials cited challenges in managing the crowd without sufficient security arrangements. The absence of a home match for KKR in Kolkata has led to criticism of Lalbazar officials, as other states have conducted IPL matches on Ram Navami without disruptions.
Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly hinted that efforts were being made to bring the match back to Eden Gardens. Speaking on the opening day of IPL 2025, he suggested that the situation could change, though no official decision has been announced. The IPL governing body has yet to release a final statement on the venue shift. Fans are awaiting further updates regarding the possibility of the match being reinstated in Kolkata.
