Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim announced that no more waste will be dumped at the Belgachia dumping ground, and the accumulated garbage will be systematically removed. During his site visit on Monday, he held a meeting with district administration and municipal officials, including District Magistrate P. Deep Priya, Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathi, MLAs Kalyan Ghosh and Gautam Choudhury, and Howrah’s Chief Municipal Administrator Dr. Sujay Chakraborty. The meeting focused on waste removal, drainage development, and relocation of affected families.
Hakim stated that 80 trucks will transport waste from Belgachia to alternative locations daily. “The accumulated garbage will be cleared soon. No new waste will be dumped here,” he said. A new concrete drainage system will be constructed to prevent waterlogging, and affected families will be relocated to safer areas. The administration is conducting a survey to facilitate proper rehabilitation. The initiative aims to address concerns regarding unscientific waste disposal, which has caused long-standing environmental and health hazards.
Authorities confirmed that the site will be completely cleaned to prevent the formation of another waste vat. The administration has already resolved water supply issues in the area. The government is monitoring the progress of waste removal and urban management efforts to ensure effective implementation of the cleanup plan.
