Tensions continue to rise in Howrah’s Belgachia area following protests by local residents. On Monday morning, Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim visited the region to assess the damage caused by a recent landslide. The visit was aimed at evaluating the situation in the affected area, where residents have been grappling with the aftermath. The area has been struggling with basic facilities and relief efforts, with local concerns about safety and the availability of food and essential services.
Later in the day, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari arrived in Belgachia around noon. He was accompanied by BJP leader Shankar Ghosh, and their visit sparked a confrontation with the police. Adhikari alleged that he was blocked from visiting the affected areas by the police. The situation escalated into a heated argument, with Adhikari accusing the police of physically assaulting him during the altercation. He showed visible scratches on his hands, stating, "The police left me bloodied."
Adhikari also criticized the government's handling of the ongoing crisis in Belgachia, particularly focusing on the hazardous conditions in the slum areas. He highlighted the dangers posed by leaking methane gas and the lack of proper relief for the affected residents. Adhikari warned that if the state government continued to ignore the situation, it could lead to even more significant problems for the local population.
