Thousands of trained nurses staged a sit-in protest at Kolkata’s Rani Rashmoni Avenue on Tuesday, demanding immediate recruitment after a two-year halt in hiring. Protesters claimed that over 20,000 qualified nurses are awaiting appointments despite vacancies in government hospitals. The last batch of recruited nurses was transferred instead of being placed in understaffed hospitals, leading to continued shortages in critical healthcare facilities.
The nurses alleged that staffing shortages are affecting patient care, yet recruitment remains stalled. The demonstrators demanded that pending recruitments be finalized without further delay and that hospitals facing acute shortages be prioritized.
After the sit-in at Dharmatala, the protesters planned to march to the Health Department to submit a deputation listing their demands. They insisted on an official response regarding the hiring freeze and the timeline for new appointments. The Health Department has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
