A major protest erupted in Howrah on Wednesday as residents blocked over 20 garbage-laden trucks from dumping waste near the Police Academy and Hindi University in Ward 47. The protest followed an order by Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim, who directed Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) to stop using the Belghachia dumping ground and shift waste disposal to the new location for one and a half months. However, strong local opposition prevented the trucks from unloading, leading to a complete halt in operations.
Municipal workers arrived early in the morning with waste collection vehicles, but hundreds of residents staged demonstrations, blocking the trucks and demanding an immediate rollback of the decision. Protesters raised concerns over health hazards and environmental risks, insisting that their neighborhood should not become a dumping site. The situation led to traffic congestion in the area, and despite the presence of senior HMC officials, no waste could be unloaded.
Authorities had selected the Ward 47 site as an alternative after residents near Belghachia complained about long-term pollution from the existing dumping ground. However, the new location, close to residential areas and educational institutions, has triggered similar objections. Officials attempted to negotiate with protesters but failed to reach a resolution. Police were informed to monitor the situation, and HMC has been forced to reconsider its waste management strategy amid growing unrest.
With no alternative site finalized, garbage disposal in Howrah remains uncertain. Municipal officials are expected to hold an emergency meeting to discuss a solution, while sanitation services in the area face possible disruptions. Protesters have stated they will continue opposing the move until authorities find a permanent and suitable waste disposal site.
