Following violent clashes between two communities in Malda’s Mothabari area, the administration has taken stringent measures to restore peace. So far, 34 people have been arrested, and internet services in the affected regions have been temporarily suspended. A heavy police force has been deployed, ensuring strict monitoring of the situation. Officials report that while tensions persist, the situation is currently under control.
According to police sources, the violence erupted on Thursday during a religious procession that passed near a place of worship. An altercation between groups quickly escalated, leading to widespread incidents of arson, vandalism, and physical assaults. As the clashes intensified, several shops and vehicles were set on fire, prompting immediate intervention by law enforcement agencies.
To prevent further escalation, the administration took special security measures on Friday. Three companies of the State Armed Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been stationed in sensitive areas. Mobile patrol squads are actively monitoring the situation to prevent any fresh outbreaks of violence. Malda IG Rajesh Yadav stated, "Our teams are conducting continuous patrols, and we are taking every measure to ensure law and order is maintained."
Meanwhile, Malda Police have reassured residents that strict action is being taken against those responsible for the violence. Officials have registered six cases related to the clashes, some of which are suo motu while others have been filed by locals. The police have urged people not to spread rumors or misinformation that could further inflame tensions.
Authorities have also clarified that, contrary to some reports, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have not been deployed in Malda district yet. However, discussions regarding additional security measures are ongoing, and officials remain on high alert to prevent any resurgence of violence.
The administration has appealed to residents to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement. With security forces patrolling the area and internet services restricted, officials hope to prevent further disturbances and restore normalcy in Malda soon.
