State Women's Commission probes Mothabari police action, locals allege excessive force

Six days after the Mothabari clashes, State Women’s Commission Chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay and a three-member team visited four affected villages to assess the situation. The team spoke to women from both sides, gathering accounts of the violence and its aftermath. While some women expressed satisfaction with the police’s role, others alleged misconduct, accusing officers of excessive force and wrongful detentions.

According to residents, multiple men were taken away by the police, with reports of physical assault during detentions. Several women alleged they were picked up without explanation. Basanti Roy, a local resident, said, “This kind of incident has never happened in our area before. We want peace.” The affected families have called for an impartial investigation into the police action.

The commission has taken note of the grievances and assured further inquiry. Officials continue to assess the situation, and authorities have been urged to ensure fair proceedings. The incident has raised concerns over law and order in the region, with demands for accountability from both sides.
