A moving air-conditioned bus caught fire near the Paikpara crossing in North Kolkata on Monday afternoon, leaving several passengers injured. The bus had started its journey from Belgharia and was travelling along BT Road when smoke was suddenly seen billowing from it near Paikpara. At the time of the incident, the bus was carrying several passengers. On spotting the smoke, panic broke out inside the vehicle and passengers rushed to get out. A stampede-like situation followed as the fire spread quickly, and flames engulfed the vehicle.
Two fire engines were deployed to the site after the fire brigade received information about the incident. Firefighters managed to control the blaze after some time. The entire area was covered in thick black smoke during the fire. Several passengers suffered minor injuries while trying to escape and were administered first aid. According to the available information, no serious injuries were reported. The fire incident occurred in broad daylight, creating traffic disruptions in the surrounding areas.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed. Preliminary suspicion points towards a short circuit inside the bus.
