A protest march by the CUTAB State Committee turned chaotic near Bikash Bhavan on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in scuffles with police and multiple detentions. The rally, which began at Karunamoyee, was stopped at Mayukh Bhavan crossing, where protesters tried to advance towards Bikash Bhavan. Police intervention led to repeated confrontations, following which several protesters were detained.
The protest was organised to press for several demands concerning State Aided College Teachers (SACT). These included allowing SACT teachers to work up to 65 years of age, ending pay disparities, providing pay scale based on collective bargaining, implementing provident fund and service book facilities, and granting representation in Governing Bodies (GBs) and Teachers’ Councils (TCs). The CUTAB State Committee also called for the introduction of general transfer and Child Care Leave (CCL) for SACT faculty members.
The scuffle began when the police prevented the march from proceeding beyond Mayukh Bhavan. Protesters resisted the blockade, leading to physical confrontation. As the group tried to move ahead towards Bikash Bhavan, the police detained several participants. There were no reports of serious injuries. Authorities have not issued an official response to the demands raised or the detentions made during the protest.
