College security guard held over Kolkata student's alleged gang-rape case; 4th arrest so far
In a peaceful yet powerful demonstration, unemployed teachers and teaching aspirants staged an innovative protest in front of the SSC Bhawan on Friday morning, choosing to express their demands not with slogans, but with roses. As a symbolic act of peace and restraint, the protestors approached police officers on duty and tried to hand them flowers—a gesture that was, however, politely declined by all the officers.
The protestors said their approach was rooted in their identity as educators—individuals trained to be patient, composed, and rational even in the face of injustice. “We are teachers. We believe in non-violence, in dialogue. That’s why we chose to offer roses, not resistance,” said one of the demonstrators.
This peaceful move comes in the wake of a violent confrontation earlier this week. A couple of days ago, the police allegedly resorted to lathi-charge and kicked some agitating teachers near the Kasba DI office during a separate protest. The incident sparked outrage among the teaching community, escalating tensions between the police and the protestors.
Since then, protestors have gathered outside the SSC Bhawan demanding transparency and justice in recruitment. Many of them claim to have cleared the required exams but are yet to receive appointment letters or posting notifications. The discontent has been building up for months, culminating in this phase of daily protests.
Friday’s floral protest was intended as both a symbol of peace and a reminder to authorities of the ethical and moral values that teachers uphold. “We teach students to resolve conflict with compassion and understanding. Today, we did the same with our protest,” another participant explained.
Despite the refusal of the roses, the teachers stood silently with their flowers for over an hour. No untoward incident was reported this time. The protestors reaffirmed their commitment to continue demonstrating peacefully until their demands are addressed.
