In a major move to improve public transport and offer affordable luxury travel, the West Bengal state government is set to launch Volvo bus services from Kolkata to Puri and other popular destinations like Digha, Mayapur, Tarapith, Siliguri, and Purulia. This marks the first time government-operated Volvo buses will ply these routes, which until now were exclusively served by private operators.
The Transport Department has confirmed that six 9,600 cc Volvo buses have been purchased at a cost of ₹9.5 crore. Each bus will be equipped with 43 air-conditioned pushback seats, reading lights, and enhanced passenger safety features, offering a modern, comfortable travel experience. These buses will originate from Dharmatala, a central hub in Kolkata.
Until now, private operators dominated the long-distance Volvo bus sector, particularly on routes to Puri, Digha, and Siliguri, often charging variable fares depending on demand. In contrast, the state-run Volvo fares will be fixed and are expected to be 30–40% cheaper than private buses. Transport department officials say this initiative will ensure consistent pricing and greater accessibility for all travelers.
The initiative is aimed at giving tourists and pilgrims an affordable yet comfortable way to visit religious and recreational destinations, especially with the Bengali New Year approaching, which typically sees a surge in travel. The online booking system for tickets will go live once the official inauguration date is announced.
There are also future expansion plans for Volvo services on other high-demand routes, including Kolkata-Bakkhali and Kolkata-Mandarmani, further expanding the government’s reach in the inter-city luxury travel market. Officials noted that the increased demand for AC buses on long-distance routes has driven this expansion effort.
