Hindi dropped from Bengaluru Airport signboards, sparks social media uproar

The Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has found itself at the center of a language debate after it removed Hindi from all signboards, opting to retain only Kannada and English. The move, captured in a video posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), has gone viral, garnering over 2 million views and igniting widespread discussions across the country.

While some citizens praised the decision as a step towards promoting Kannada and preserving regional identity, others strongly criticized the exclusion of Hindi—a language spoken by millions across India. Many expressed concerns about the accessibility and inclusiveness of one of the country’s busiest international airports.

Airports are gateways, not cultural battlegrounds,” one user wrote, voicing concerns for travelers who don’t speak either English or Kannada. Another added, “While Hindi might be optional at metro stations, removing it from international hubs is illogical and exclusionary.” The decision has drawn parallels with global examples. One user pointed out, “Even the Dubai Crown Prince tweets in Hindi to respect Indian visitors, yet our own airport sidelines the language entirely.”

Some also questioned the inconsistency in language policies across different transport hubs in India, arguing that a standard approach is needed. Others urged authorities to consider the primary purpose of airports—convenience and clarity for all travelers.

Amid the rising criticism, no official statement has been released by the Bengaluru International Airport authorities. Meanwhile, the discussion continues to trend, reflecting deep-rooted sentiments around language, identity, and practicality in public spaces.
