In yet another heartbreaking incident along the Ganga, two Class 10 students drowned while bathing at the Boro Mandir Ganga Ghat in Konnagar on Monday morning. The victims, identified as Aman Singh and Adarsh Singh, were students of Stepping Stone School in Risda Bangur Park.
The incident occurred shortly after the boys, along with three of their schoolmates, had gone to the nearby Alkali ground to play. After the game, the group headed to the temple ghat to take a bath in the river. While three of them managed to return safely, Aman and Adarsh failed to resurface after jumping into the water.
The Chandannagar Police Commissionerate immediately reached the spot and alerted the disaster response team, which began a rescue operation with the help of trained divers. The area was cordoned off, and frantic search efforts were launched in the swirling waters of the Ganga.
According to local sources, the teenagers may have misjudged the current or stepped into a sudden depth, which led to the tragedy. Rescue teams have continued operations for several hours since the incident, but no official confirmation has yet come about the recovery of their bodies.
This is not the first such incident at this ghat. The frequency of drowning cases along this stretch of the Ganga has been rising, raising questions about safety protocols, absence of warning signage, and lack of supervision at popular bathing spots.
The entire community, especially school friends and teachers of the victims, are in shock. As search operations continue, families of the two boys wait in agony, praying for a miracle amid the swelling river tide.
