Amid rising political heat over the Waqf Act in West Bengal, Kolkata Mayor and Minister of State Firhad Hakim has strongly criticised the recent protest led by the Indian Secular Front (ISF). Addressing media queries on Monday, Hakim questioned the logic behind the ongoing demonstrations in Bhangarh, especially after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee clearly stated that the Waqf Act will not be implemented in the state.
Hakim directly addressed the ISF's mobilization, particularly targeting the rally held by Bhangarh MLA Naushad Siddiqui. "The Chief Minister has already said the Waqf Act won't be implemented here. So those who are doing this drama — why are they doing it?" he said, questioning the intent and political motive behind the march.
The protest rally by ISF workers and supporters began from Bhangarh on Monday morning. The crowd, led by Siddiqui, demanded clarity and retraction regarding the Waqf Act’s alleged implications in Bengal. However, the state government has repeatedly clarified that the central law has no mandate in the state without the approval of the state legislature.
Firhad Hakim further suggested that instead of staging protests within Bengal, those concerned should head to the national capital. “If you truly want to oppose the Waqf Act, then go to Delhi. That’s where it was made,” he said. His comments were clearly aimed at shifting the discourse from state-level agitation to central-level accountability.
Murshidabad and nearby districts have seen a rise in tension over the last few days regarding land-related concerns tied to the Waqf Board. The ISF has seized the moment to voice its opposition, but the state administration has remained firm that no changes are being enforced in West Bengal.
This latest political flashpoint has intensified the ISF vs TMC divide, with the ruling party dismissing the protests as theatrics. Whether this leads to a larger political movement or fizzles out as a symbolic protest remains to be seen in the days ahead.
