West Bengal Forest Minister of State Birbaha Hansda’s vehicle was involved in a road accident on Sunday night in the Girja Mor area of Medinipur town. According to police, a toto (battery-powered rickshaw) lost control and overturned in front of the minister’s car while she was travelling from Keranichati towards Jhargram. The impact left three passengers in the toto — a woman, her nine-month-old child, and her brother — injured. Hansda was unharmed, and her car sustained no major damage.
Police officials stated that the accident took place when the toto approached from the opposite direction and suddenly swerved onto the path of the minister’s car, causing it to overturn. Due to the lightweight structure of the toto, the passengers sustained injuries. The woman and the youth received injuries to their limbs, while the infant's condition raised immediate concern. Following the incident, the minister stopped her vehicle and transported the injured individuals to Medinipur Medical College Hospital.
Hansda confirmed the details, stating, “The toto suddenly came in front of my car and overturned. It had a woman, her small child, and a gentleman inside. The woman and the man had injuries on their arms and legs. The baby was our main concern, so I personally took them to the hospital.” The injured are currently receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident.
