Union Minister of State and BJP’s West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar visited Dhuliyan following incidents of violence that left several families displaced. He met with the victims, many of whom are currently staying in makeshift camps. According to the victims, there was a night-long rampage during which homes were destroyed. They alleged that despite repeated pleas, the police did not respond or intervene. One woman said, “We cried and cried until we were numb. The police knew everything, yet they didn’t come even once.”
During his visit, Majumdar assured the affected people that the central government stands with them and that their complaints would be addressed. He stated that the local population has no faith in the state police and demanded increased deployment of central forces in the area. He added that people at the refugee camp were demanding a permanent BSF camp for security. “I will appeal to the state government to request the Centre to set up a permanent central forces camp here,” he said.
Majumdar announced that he would write to the Chief Secretary, recommending financial support for the owners of 56 destroyed shops and restoration of damaged religious idols. “Those who cannot respect another’s religion do not respect their own,” he said. He is also scheduled to visit Jafarabad to meet the family of a father and son who were killed. The National Commission for Women had recently begun its district-level visit from this same area.
