Mehbooba claims 5 killed in Pahalgam terror attack; CM Omar Abdullah, LG and BJP condemn the 'cowardly act'

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has strongly condemned the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, confirming that at least five people have been killed. Calling the attack "cowardly," Mufti urged authorities to launch a thorough investigation to ensure justice and uncover any security lapses that may have enabled the assault.

Mufti stressed that Kashmir has historically welcomed tourists with warmth and that such incidents severely tarnish the region’s image. She emphasized the urgent need for improved safety measures to protect visitors and prevent future attacks, describing the incident as "deeply concerning" for the valley's peace and hospitality traditions.

Current Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed his shock and horror at the attack. Announcing that he was returning immediately to Srinagar, Abdullah said, "This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators are inhuman and worthy of contempt." He extended his sympathies to the families of the victims and called for swift action against those responsible.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Ravinder Raina blamed "Pakistani terrorists" for the attack. Speaking to reporters, Raina stated that Pakistani militants deliberately targeted innocent tourists to destabilize the peace in South Kashmir. He praised the bravery of Indian forces while warning that such acts would only strengthen India's resolve against terrorism.

The tragic attack comes almost a year after terrorists killed a doctor and six construction workers at a tunnel construction site in Ganderbal district. That incident had similarly drawn widespread condemnation, with Omar Abdullah labelling it a "dastardly and cowardly" act.

As investigations into the Pahalgam incident begin, there is a renewed call from political leaders across the spectrum to tighten security protocols and safeguard the lives of both locals and visitors in the region.
