30 Pakistanis living in Kolkata on LT visa under intelligence agencies' watch

Central government and intelligence agencies have significantly stepped up surveillance measures across the country. A key area of focus is Kolkata, where 30 Pakistani nationals, mostly women, are currently residing on Long Term Visas (LTV). Intelligence sources confirm that these individuals are now under close scrutiny.

LTVs are typically granted to Pakistani citizens, especially women, who marry Indian nationals and choose to settle in India. These visas are initially valid for five years and must be renewed periodically, typically every one or two years. Before each renewal, a detailed intelligence clearance is required. In light of current tensions, this process has become even more rigorous.

According to intelligence sources, the Pakistani women in Kolkata have regular communication with their maternal families back in Pakistan. While these exchanges may appear familial and routine, intelligence agencies are now verifying whether such contacts extend beyond personal ties. They are specifically investigating whether any Indian citizens are unknowingly or knowingly serving as links in communication chains that may have national security implications.

This move follows a recent decision by the Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs, which on Wednesday revoked visas issued under the SAARC Visa Scheme. A day later, all visas issued to Pakistani citizens were canceled nationwide, with orders for immediate return to Pakistan. However, officials have clarified that no Pakistani nationals on SAARC visas have been traced in Kolkata so far.

Despite this, intelligence officials are leaving no room for doubt. Surveillance has been ramped up, and if any suspicious activity is detected, those on LTV and their local family members may be formally questioned. This preemptive strategy is part of a broader national security response aimed at neutralizing any potential threats stemming from cross-border influence or covert networks.
