In an attempt to restore law and order and counter misinformation, Berhampore MP and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan has announced plans to install CCTV cameras throughout the town using funds from the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS). The announcement came after a day of public interactions and meetings with religious and community leaders in Murshidabad district.
The MP, who has been criticized on social media for being absent from his constituency during recent tensions in Shamsherganj and Dhulian, made a sudden appearance in Dakshin Debkund village of Beldanga. Sipping tea at a roadside stall, Yusuf engaged in candid discussions with local Trinamool workers and residents. He listened to their concerns and suggestions about development and peace in the region.
Later, in a formal meeting held at the Minority Building in Berhampore, Yusuf met with imams, moazzins, and Hindu priests as part of a harmony initiative. Emphasizing unity and vigilance, he urged people not to be swayed by fake news and rumors spreading on social media. “Believe what your eyes and ears witness—not what viral messages claim,” he said.
Yusuf Pathan expressed concern over how quickly misinformation spreads and contributes to unrest. “Berhampore has always had a reputation for harmony. We must protect that,” he insisted. He added that he had spoken to senior police officials and discussed ways to support them in maintaining peace in the area.
“I want to use MPLAD funds to install CCTV cameras in every corner of Berhampore. This will not only help the police monitor sensitive areas but also create a sense of safety among the people,” the MP declared. He called upon the public to suggest locations and needs that should be prioritized.
