The inauguration of the newly constructed Jagannath Temple in Digha on 30 April is generating significant anticipation among local traders and business owners. The temple, set to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is expected to attract large numbers of tourists and devotees to the coastal town. Traders are preparing for an increase in footfall and hoping for improved business after a prolonged downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the pandemic, lockdowns forced the closure of hotels, roadside stalls, and small businesses in Digha, resulting in severe economic losses. Many traders struggled to meet daily needs as tourist activity came to a standstill. Although tourism has gradually resumed over the last few years, the financial damage from that period remains unresolved for many local business owners. The temple's opening is now seen as a potential catalyst for renewed economic activity in the area.
Digha has undergone infrastructural upgrades in the past decade to support its growing status as a tourism hub. Developments include beachfront reinforcement, widened and improved roadways, and enhanced safety measures. The town has become a preferred weekend destination offering coastal views, seafood, and local handicrafts. With the addition of the Jagannath Temple, a new dimension is being added to the tourism profile of the area, combining pilgrimage with leisure.
According to hotel operator Buddhadev Pradhan, the temple opening coincides with the summer holiday season, and a rise in visitors is expected. Hotel manager Deepankar Majhi noted that those unable to visit Puri may now consider coming to Digha for darshan. Trader Azharuddin mentioned that the losses suffered during the lockdown may now be addressed through increased tourist traffic generated by the temple's launch.
