On the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, a Sanatan Sammelan was organised in Kanthi, East Medinipur, under the leadership of Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari. The event, held with the stated objective of protecting Hindu Dharma, saw participation from thousands of attendees, including saints and religious followers. The gathering took place with traditional practices and chants, with saffron flags prominently displayed across the venue.
During the event, Adhikari initiated a drive for the purification and reconstruction of Hindu temples in Murshidabad district that had been damaged in what he described as “jihadi attacks.” He stated that the restoration work was being carried out as per traditional Sanatan rituals and customs. He appealed to the Hindu community to stay united in the face of religious challenges and urged people to oppose what he referred to as “Hindu-opposing policies” of the state government. Adhikari demanded the removal of the current government and called for protection of Hindus across the state.
The West Bengal government moved the Calcutta High Court seeking to block the Sanatan Sammelan from taking place in Kanthi. Despite that, the programme was held as planned, and concluded with calls for further mobilisation for religious and cultural assertion across districts. Organisers claimed it was a step toward reviving traditional values and securing religious rights in West Bengal.
