Kolkata observed the 2569th International Vesak Day with a two-day celebration organised by Siddhartha United Social Welfare Mission on Mayo Road. Buddhist monks from India and abroad participated in the event, offering prayers and attending a seminar focused on global peace. The celebration was held to mark Buddha Jayanti, which falls on Monday.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Buddhapriya Mahathero, president of the West Bengal Buddha Jayanti Celebration Committee, said, “We are observing Buddha Jayanti over two days. Today, monks from different countries have joined us to discuss and promote peace.” He added that the aim is to spread Buddha's message more widely among the general public.
Buddhist monks attending the seminar emphasised the teachings of Gautama Buddha as essential for restoring peace. They appealed to the Indian government to take the lead in promoting peace and non-violence globally. The event concluded with collective prayers for world peace and harmony.
