A shocking incident of robbery and blackmail has come to light from a brothel in the Burtolla area of North Kolkata, where a young man was allegedly locked inside a room and robbed of ₹1.3 lakh by two sex workers. The incident occurred on Saturday and has sparked concern over customer safety in the notorious Sonagachi red-light area.
According to police sources, the victim, a resident of Farakka in Murshidabad, visited a brothel in Sonagachi under the Burtolla police station's jurisdiction. He was taken into a room and then allegedly locked in from the outside. The man claimed that once trapped, he was threatened and assaulted.
The sex workers reportedly demanded money, but when he said he didn’t have cash, they allegedly snatched his ATM card and began blackmailing him, warning that they would contact his family and reveal his whereabouts. Under pressure, the man revealed his ATM PIN to them.
Two accused sex workers, identified as Rinki Dhara and Rakhi Das, then withdrew ₹1.3 lakh using the victim's card. After the money was withdrawn, they reportedly pushed the youth out of the house and fled. Local residents, after hearing his account, advised him to file a police complaint.
Acting swiftly, the Burtolla Police tracked and arrested the two women. They are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation. Police say further investigation is on to check if others were involved and whether similar incidents have occurred earlier.
