Brother kills elder sibling in Canning over property dispute; Wife injured while trying to resue

A tragic incident unfolded late Tuesday night in the Majherpara area of West Kumar Sachak, located within the Canning police station jurisdiction of South 24 Parganas. Shahjahan Sardar, a 45-year-old man, was brutally attacked and killed by his stepbrother, Amir Ali Sardar, using a sharp weapon. The attack occurred while Shahjahan was returning home from his in-laws' residence, accompanied by his wife, Javedah. In an attempt to save her husband, Javedah was also injured in the assault.

The cause of the attack is believed to be a property dispute that had been ongoing for the past three years. Shahjahan and Amir had been in a legal conflict over a six kathas piece of land. Shahjahan, who was the son of Kasem Sardar’s first wife, and Amir, who was born to Kasem’s second wife, were reportedly involved in a deepening conflict over the land ownership. The violence escalated when Amir ambushed Shahjahan and struck him with a sharp weapon. Shahjahan fell to the ground, severely injured, and died shortly after the attack.

Javedah, attempting to intervene and protect her husband, was also attacked by Amir. Both victims were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Shahjahan, however, was declared dead upon arrival, while Javedah received medical attention for her injuries. Local residents, upon learning of the murder, became enraged and attacked Amir's house. Police forces arrived at the scene to control the situation and prevent further escalation.

The police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Shahjahan’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, while the authorities are examining whether the attack was solely driven by the property dispute or if other factors were involved. Amir Ali Sardar, the primary suspect, is currently on the run, and police have launched an extensive search operation to apprehend him. Given the rising tensions in the village, additional police forces have been deployed to maintain order.
