A charred, unidentified body was recovered from the first floor of an under-construction building in Bagbazar on Saturday morning. Local residents alerted police after detecting a burning smell from the structure. Officers from Shyampukur police station and the fire brigade reached the spot and began an investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem, and the identity is yet to be confirmed.
The building's caretaker stated that a few technicians had come on Friday to install an AC on the third floor. “Around 5:30 PM, I locked the gate and left. No one was inside, and I keep the keys with me,” he said. He also added that the only way to enter the premises without the key was by climbing over the gate.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are examining possible entry routes, checking CCTV footage from nearby areas, and verifying whether any missing person reports match the body found. Forensic teams are assisting in the investigation.
