Gariahat youth killed by 4 friends over ₹9,000: Police

A shocking murder over a mere ₹9,000 loan has rocked the Gariahat area of Kolkata. The victim, Binod Das, was found dead outside his house on March 26. For almost two months, the death was dismissed as a natural or alcohol-related tragedy—until a determined father reopened the case and revealed the horrifying truth: his son had been brutally murdered by his own friends.

Binod Das was discovered lifeless in front of his home on Purnadas Road in the early morning hours. At the time, his friends told the police he had likely died due to excessive drinking. The body was recovered, and no foul play was initially suspected. With no objections from the family—Binod’s father was away from home at the time—the case went cold, and last rites were carried out quietly.

However, when Binod’s father returned to Kolkata and spoke with neighbors, he was startled to hear a different version of events. One neighbor recalled seeing Binod wrapped in a blanket and surrounded by four friends during the night. The same friends who claimed ignorance appeared suspicious. This conversation convinced the grieving father to return to Gariahat police station on May 15 and request a fresh investigation.

Acting promptly on the father’s appeal, the police reopened the case and reviewed the autopsy report. What they found was chilling: Binod had four broken ribs and a fatal blow to the back of his head. These were clear signs of a deliberate, violent assault. Investigators quickly zeroed in on the group of friends who were last seen with him.

During interrogation, two friends—Nilanjan Goswami alias Babla and Shubhdeep alias Babu—confessed to their involvement in the murder after initially feigning ignorance. Following this breakthrough, the police arrested two more accomplices, Arvind Kumar Sau and Yogendra Chowdhury. Within 48 hours of the reopened case, the police had unraveled the full conspiracy behind Binod's murder.
