In an awe-inspiring achievement that has gripped the nation, 27-year-old Chonjin Angmo from Himachal Pradesh has scaled the summit of Mount Everest — despite being visually impaired. Her incredible journey to the world’s highest peak is being hailed as one of the most inspiring feats in recent mountaineering history.
Angmo was accompanied on this expedition by Laxmikant Mondal, a Kolkata Police officer currently posted as a bodyguard in the Metropolitan Police unit. Both reached the summit early Monday morning, supported by a seasoned team of climbers including Tenzing Sherpa (Gelba), Geeta Samota, and Lakpa Sherpa. The expedition was managed by a Nepal-based trekking agency.
Laxmikant began his climb in April after receiving well-wishes from Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and other senior officials. His successful summit has drawn admiration from across the force, with the West Bengal Police expressing pride in his accomplishment. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also lauded his achievement on social media, calling it a "shining example of courage and determination."
But it is Angmo’s story that has captivated people’s hearts. Blind since birth, she relied on her indomitable spirit, rigorous training, and teamwork to overcome every obstacle on the treacherous path to the summit. Her name now stands as a symbol of resilience and bravery, with people from across the country celebrating her as a national hero.
As the mountaineering duo begins their descent, prayers and well-wishes pour in for their safe return. Their journey has not only rewritten records but also inspired millions by proving that no barrier is too big when the will is strong enough.
