West Bengal may soon witness a historic moment as Justice Bela M. Trivedi, who recently took early retirement from the Supreme Court of India, is being considered for the post of Governor of West Bengal, according to reliable sources. If appointed, she will be the first woman governor of the state.
Justice Trivedi officially retired on May 16, ending a distinguished three-and-a-half-year stint in the apex court. Her retirement came slightly earlier than expected, and she reportedly left for the United States to attend a family wedding. However, behind the scenes, her next significant assignment seems to be unfolding.
Justice Trivedi has had a remarkable legal career. Before her elevation to the Supreme Court in August 2021, she served as a trial court judge in Gujarat and later held important positions in both the Gujarat and Rajasthan High Courts. She was the eleventh woman to serve in the Supreme Court and delivered key judgments on issues like the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) reservation, sub-classification among Scheduled Castes, and child protection under the POCSO Act.
Her appointment is likely to come as a replacement for Governor CV Ananda Bose, who has faced health issues in recent weeks. Bose, who assumed office on 23 November 2022, was hospitalized last month due to chest pain and was later diagnosed with mild coronary artery disease. After spending 23 days in the hospital and undergoing an intervention procedure, he was discharged.
