West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal has ordered an inquiry into allegations that Koel Majumdar, wife of BJP state president and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, holds two separate voter identity cards from two different districts—Jalpaiguri and South Dinajpur. The Election Commission’s directive follows a formal complaint submitted against her.
According to official records under scrutiny, Koel is registered as “Koel Choudhury” in Jalpaiguri and as “Koel Majumdar” in South Dinajpur. Both voter IDs reportedly bear different EPIC numbers. If elections in both constituencies are held on separate dates, it creates a possibility that the same person could vote twice, which is a violation under electoral laws.
Preliminary findings suggest that before her marriage to Sukanta Majumdar, Koel was a resident of Jalpaiguri and had a voter ID in her maiden name. After her marriage, she moved to South Dinajpur and applied for a new voter ID under her married name. However, instead of updating her existing voter information through Form 8, which is required when changing name or constituency, she allegedly submitted Form 6—meant for new voters.
The CEO has directed the District Magistrates of both Jalpaiguri and South Dinajpur to conduct an immediate verification and submit a report. The investigation will determine whether both IDs belong to the same individual. If confirmed, further action will be initiated under the Representation of the People Act, which prohibits duplicate voter registrations.
Election Commission sources have confirmed that the matter is being treated with priority. The report from the district administrations is expected within this week and will be forwarded to the commission’s Delhi office. The next steps will depend on the findings of the investigation and confirmation of identity.
