A sudden storm accompanied by heavy rain hit Hooghly district’s Chinsurah on Wednesday evening, resulting in widespread damage across several areas including Shyambabu Ghat, Khadeshwartala, and Bandel’s Boro Masjid locality. Multiple trees were uprooted, with some falling onto roads and houses. In several locations, traffic movement was disrupted and power supply was affected due to fallen branches.
In Shyambabu Ghat, a man took shelter inside a roadside shop during the storm when a large banyan tree collapsed on the structure. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Chinsurah Imambara Hospital for treatment. Local resident Arup Kumar Dhar said, “There was a large banyan tree in front of our house. During the storm, one of its branches broke and fell on a man. He was injured on his legs, ribs, and back.”
Clearing operations began shortly after the storm subsided. Local authorities worked to remove uprooted trees and restore access to blocked roads. No other injuries have been reported so far. Residents have been advised to exercise caution during sudden weather changes and avoid taking shelter under trees or temporary structures.
