A low-pressure system is expected to form in the central and northern Bay of Bengal around May 27, according to the Alipore Meteorological Department. This system is predicted to move slowly northwards and intensify by May 29, though it is not expected to develop into a cyclone at present.
Rainfall is likely to begin in South Bengal from May 28, with heavy precipitation anticipated in the districts of North and South 24 Parganas, as well as East and West Medinipur. The meteorological department has issued warnings for these four districts regarding possible heavy rainfall during this period.
In addition to the Bay of Bengal system, another low-pressure area is forming over the Arabian Sea. This system may intensify into a deep depression, but no further developments have been confirmed at this time. The impact of this system on local weather conditions is under observation.
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast across the state on May 24 and 25. Districts in North Bengal, including Birbhum and Murshidabad, have been alerted for heavy rain. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal during the coming days.
Earlier forecasts from Bangladesh’s meteorological authorities indicated a possible cyclone formation between May 24 and 26 in the Bay of Bengal, which might have been named 'Shakti' and could affect areas between the Odisha coast and Chattogram in Bangladesh. However, the Alipore Meteorological Department has not confirmed this development and continues to monitor the situation.
