Dr. Anand Bandhopadhyay, a physician born in Kolkata and currently based in the United States, has been awarded the IVI–SK Biosciences Park Mahnhoon Award for his significant contributions to polio eradication efforts. The 45-year-old researcher is affiliated with the Gates Foundation and received the award jointly with Professor Pierre Van Dam from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. Both scientists were recognized for their work on developing a novel oral polio vaccine.
The IVI–SK Biosciences Park Mahnhoon Award is presented by the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), an international organization dedicated to the research, development, and global supply of vaccines. The award specifically acknowledged the innovative development and effective use of the new oral polio vaccine, which plays a critical role in polio elimination campaigns worldwide. The award ceremony for 2025 took place on April 30.
