BSF soldier Purnim Shaw returned to his home in Rishra, Hooghly, today after spending 22 days in Pakistani custody. He was detained after mistakenly stepping onto Pakistani soil during a border patrol. Despite multiple flag meetings between India and Pakistan, no immediate resolution was reached, leading to his prolonged detention by Pakistani Rangers.
Purnim was released on May 14 and crossed back into India through the Attari-Wagah border. After his release, he underwent medical examinations before being allowed to return home. The central government made intensive efforts to secure his release, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally expressing concern and speaking three times with Purnim’s wife, Rajni Shaw.
At home, Purnim was welcomed with his favorite dishes including luchi and two types of curry, along with sweets and cake. A procession was organized in the area by the local municipality chairman to celebrate his return. The community expressed happiness at his safe arrival.
Purnim’s wife said, “After many days, he is coming home. It feels very good. But since there was no phone, we couldn't talk. Today, when he returned home, his favorite luchi with vegetable curry and yogurt, along with sweets, have been prepared.” The family expressed gratitude for the efforts that led to his release.
