Lawyer arrested from Calcutta HC for contempt after advising client to ignore Court order, insulting Judge in courtroom

Advocate Arunanshu Chakraborty was arrested from Calcutta High Court after Justice Kaushik Chanda ordered his immediate detention on charges of contempt of court. The lawyer was representing a professor from Rabindra Bharati University who had lost a case in the court. Following the verdict, Chakraborty allegedly advised his client to disobey the court’s directions and made objectionable remarks against the presiding judge.

Sources stated that the lawyer told his client, “After a verdict, many people don’t follow court orders, yet no action is taken.” He further added that it was not necessary to comply with the High Court’s decision. These remarks were brought to the notice of Justice Chanda when the case appeared before him again on Friday. After reviewing the matter, the judge expressed strong displeasure in court and issued a directive for immediate arrest from the courtroom.

Following the order, police personnel took Chakraborty into custody and initiated legal proceedings. He has been sent to four days of judicial custody. Officials confirmed that Chakraborty has previously drawn the court’s attention for his conduct and remarks, though this is the first instance of arrest from the High Court premises. The matter has drawn widespread attention in the legal community.
