A civic volunteer identified as Neeraj Singh, posted at Kolkata’s Pragati Maidan police station, was arrested at night from the Kasba area for impersonating a police constable and extorting money. According to officials, Singh had allegedly stolen a constable’s uniform from the police station and wore it while patrolling local streets.
Police said Singh was collecting money from shopkeepers, bikers, and car drivers in the area by misusing the authority of the uniform. Residents initially believed him to be a genuine officer, but his actions raised suspicion. Locals then contacted the police control room via the 100 helpline. A team from Kasba police station arrived at the spot and verified his identity, leading to his immediate arrest.
An FIR has been registered, and a departmental inquiry is underway. Police have confirmed that action was taken based on multiple complaints from residents. Authorities are investigating how the uniform was accessed and whether Singh was previously involved in similar activities. No weapons were recovered from his possession at the time of arrest.
