The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has announced 38-year-old Alifa Ahmed as its candidate for the Kaliganj Assembly by-election, scheduled to be held on June 19, 2025, in West Bengal’s Nadia district. The announcement was made through the party’s official handle on X, stating: “Under the inspiration and guidance of Chairperson Mamata Banerjee, AITC is pleased to announce the candidate for the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly By-election scheduled for June 19, 2025.”
Alifa Ahmed is the daughter of former TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, also known as ‘Lal da’. She holds a B.Tech degree and is employed at a reputed IT company. TMC leaders stated that she has prior experience in public service as a Zilla Parishad member from Kaliganj. A senior TMC leader said, “She is widely respected in the area for her eloquence and people-first approach.”
The bypoll was necessitated following the death of sitting MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed in February 2025 at the age of 70. He had represented the Kaliganj constituency multiple times, securing victories in 2011 and 2021, while losing the seat once in 2016. The Election Commission of India recently revised the electoral rolls for the constituency, which now has approximately 2.5 lakh registered voters.
According to the Election Commission’s schedule, the last date for filing nominations is June 2, with scrutiny on June 3 and withdrawal allowed till June 5. Polling is set for June 19 and counting will take place on June 23. To ensure peaceful polling, 20 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be deployed in the area. The forces are expected to identify sensitive areas and secure polling booths ahead of voting.
