A deep depression has formed over the Bay of Bengal, intensifying tidal activity along the coastal areas of South 24 Parganas. Due to the Amavasya Kotal, tidal waves have surged further, especially in Gangasagar, where large waves are crashing near the Kapil Muni temple. Strong winds have also been reported from the region, while rivers in coastal blocks like Namkhana, Kakdwip, and Patharpratima are already swelling.
Continuous rainfall over the past few days has weakened earthen river embankments in several parts of the Sundarbans. According to local officials, repair work has begun on a war footing to reinforce fragile embankments across Namkhana, Patharpratima, Mousuni Island, Kakdwip, Bakkhali, and Gangasagar. The block administration has taken precautionary steps to restrict tourist activity and prevent public movement near vulnerable sites.
Tourists have been evacuated from key coastal areas, and sea bathing has been banned as a preventive measure. Control rooms have been activated in Kakdwip and Gangasagar to handle emergencies. The disaster management team in Sagar block is issuing alerts through loudspeakers at the Kapil Muni temple and beaches, urging tourists to avoid coastal zones. Local residents in low-lying areas are being cautioned about the risks from high tides and potential embankment breaches.
