Five people, including two women, died and four others were seriously injured in a road accident near Irinchi Bridge on National Highway 116B in Purba Medinipur on Wednesday night. A lorry collided with an auto-rickshaw carrying nine people, including the driver. The deceased were part of a family returning to their home in Chalti area of Contai’s Deshpran block after arriving from Delhi.
The family had deboarded a train at Mecheda station and hired an auto-rickshaw to reach their destination. The incident occurred while it was raining. As the auto-rickshaw approached Irinchi Bridge, a lorry reportedly hit it from behind, causing severe damage and leaving all occupants injured. Local residents rushed to the spot and informed the police.
Police arrived at the site and sent the injured to Kanthi Sub-divisional Hospital. Doctors declared five passengers dead on arrival. The remaining four — a woman, a man, and two children — are under treatment. The identities of the victims are being verified. Police have begun an investigation and are searching for the lorry driver, who fled the scene.
