Humayun Kabir, son of the elderly couple found murdered in Memari on Wednesday morning, was arrested later that evening in Bangaon, North 24 Parganas. According to Bangaon Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar, Kabir allegedly attempted to attack individuals with a knife at a local madrasa. He is a resident of Memari in Purba Bardhaman district and a civil engineer by profession.
Earlier the same day, the bodies of Haji Mustafizur Rahman (66) and his wife Momtaz Parvin (56) were found with their throats slit outside their home in Kazi Para, Kashiyara Moktar Bagan area, under Memari Municipality. Police suspect the murders occurred inside the residence, and the bodies were dragged outside. Following the incident, Kabir had been reported missing, prompting a search.
After his arrest, a crowd gathered at Bangaon Police Station and attempted to seize Kabir from police custody. They also tried to vandalize the reception area. “The situation is under control,” SP Dinesh Kumar said in a statement. “There is no communal aspect to the incident. Ten people were arrested for trying to disrupt law and order.” Further investigation is underway.
