A combination of low atmospheric pressure and the Amavasya tide has caused severe sea turbulence near Gangasagar. Seawater has breached the No. 2 road and the river boundary in front of the Kapilmuni temple, flooding the mela ground. The administration has initiated repair work on the breached embankments but is facing difficulties due to the powerful waves during high tide.
Materials and wood brought for the repair of the embankment are being swept away by the sea waves, slowing down restoration efforts. The rising waves and continuous water intrusion have created challenges for controlling the flooding and protecting the area around the temple and mela site.
In response to the situation, the Gangasagar block administration and the coastal police station have temporarily suspended the sacred bathing ritual to ensure safety. Strict monitoring and surveillance are ongoing along the coastline as authorities manage the impact of the sea surge on the region.
