Heavy rain in Karnataka’s Mangaluru led to a tragic landslide early Friday, killing a 3-year-old boy and a woman after a portion of a hill collapsed onto their house. The residence belonged to Kanthappa Poojari, whose wife, Prema, was killed in the incident. Their 3-year-old grandson Aryan also died, while the toddler’s mother Ashwini and younger sibling Aarush were rescued.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams rushed to the site and pulled out several survivors from the debris, including Kanthappa and another relative, Seetharam. Rescue efforts continued as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah instructed District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and the Collector to oversee operations on the ground and ensure immediate support.
This was not the only fatal incident triggered by rain in Mangaluru. In a separate locality, a 10-year-old girl named Nayeem died when a compound wall collapsed on her home. She was critically injured and later succumbed at the hospital.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for coastal Karnataka, predicting very heavy rainfall, lightning, and thunderstorms. The district administration has declared a holiday for educational institutions on May 30 as a precautionary measure.
