TMC's Anubrata Mondal booked for threatening Bolpur IC; Party demands apology within 4 hours

An FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal at Bolpur police station in Birbhum district over a viral audio clip. The clip allegedly features Mondal abusing and threatening Bolpur’s Inspector-in-Charge (IC), Litan Haldar. The complaint was filed by the IC himself, following which police took action on Friday.

According to Birbhum Superintendent of Police Amandeep, the FIR against Mondal has been filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 224 (obstruction and threat to public servant), Section 132 (misconduct with a government official), Section 75 (breach of decorum), and Section 351 (issuing threats). The police have initiated an investigation based on the complaint.

Trinamool Congress also took a strong position on the incident. A public statement was issued by the party at 2:32 PM on Friday, instructing Anubrata Mondal to tender an unconditional apology within four hours. The party stated that it does not support the language allegedly used by Mondal against a police officer and condemned the conduct. The statement warned that failure to issue an apology would result in disciplinary proceedings.

Anubrata Mondal responded to the allegations by denying that the voice in the viral clip was his. He claimed he had contacted the IC only once, and during the call, the officer allegedly spoke to him in a disrespectful manner and disconnected the call. Mondal’s statement did not address whether any inquiry was initiated into the clash that preceded the incident.

Earlier, a violent clash had occurred in Singi village of Bolpur between supporters of Anubrata Mondal and fellow TMC leader Kajal Sheikh. Several people were injured. Following the incident, Mondal and his supporters visited Bolpur police station to protest what they termed police inaction. It was during this visit that Mondal allegedly made threatening and abusive remarks to IC Litan Haldar, which were later circulated via a viral audio clip.

Sources indicated that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier directed both Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh to work together in Birbhum. Both leaders had publicly acknowledged the instruction. The Bharatiya Janata Party has also reacted to the incident, with BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar referring to Mondal as the Chief Minister’s “respected son” and accusing the TMC of ignoring misconduct by senior leaders. He also said the clip reflected the party’s mindset towards women staff.
