Senior IPS officer Muralidhar Sharma, formerly head of Kolkata Police’s Detective Department, has written lyrics for a commercial film song for the first time. The item song titled “DJ pe mast koi gaana baja… jab tak ye saans chale, shor macha…” features in the Bengali film Mrigaya – The Hunt and has been sung by Bollywood playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan.
The music has been composed by Rana Mazumdar, and the song is performed onscreen by actress Sushmita Chatterjee. Muralidhar Sharma, who has previously written Urdu ghazals under the pen name “Muralidhar Sharma Talib”, has a long-standing interest in Urdu literature and poetry. He has authored multiple Urdu books and has been influenced by poets like Nasir Kazmi and Irfan Siddiqui.
Speaking about his experience, Sharma said, “I write ghazals, which is a completely different genre. Initially, I was hesitant, but upon the music director’s request, I gave it a try. How successful it is, only the listeners can say.” The film's story is based on a real incident from North Kolkata that is currently under judicial consideration. The script was written by Debashis Dutta, Officer-in-Charge of Maniktala Police Station.
Apart from the story, Dutta has also written four songs for the film, contributing significantly to its narrative and musical elements. Mriguya – The Hunt is directed by Abhirup Ghosh. The cast includes Ritwick Chakraborty, Anirban Chakrabarti, Vikram Chatterjee, and Rezwan Rabbani Sheikh. Actor Saurav Das plays the role of the antagonist.
The film combines elements of crime, drama, and music, set against the backdrop of a true police case. When asked about future involvement in songwriting, IPS Muralidhar Sharma stated that he has not made any such plans for now but may consider future projects if a suitable offer comes.
