Woman jumps to death from multi-storey building in Howrah; Family alleges torture by in-laws

A 25-year-old woman died by suicide after jumping from a multi-storey building in Uluberia on Monday morning, coinciding with Jamai Shashti. The incident took place in Ward Number 28 of Uluberia Municipality in Latibpur. The deceased was identified as Preeti Bag Majumdar. Uluberia police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem to Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Medical College and Hospital.

According to police and local sources, Preeti had married Ritwik Majumdar of Baganda, Uluberia about six months ago. Their marriage reportedly took place after the two connected through social media. Preeti had been residing at her in-laws’ place since the marriage.

Preeti’s mother, Putul Bag, alleged that her daughter was subjected to various forms of mental and physical harassment by her in-laws after the marriage. She claimed that this continuous torture led Preeti to take the step of ending her life.

Police have started a detailed investigation into the matter. Statements from the family and other witnesses are being recorded. No arrests had been made as of the latest updates. The post-mortem report is awaited to ascertain the exact cause of death.
