On duty Nadia cop shoots himself in head to commit suicide

A police constable posted at the Gopalnagar police naka checking post in North 24 Parganas attempted suicide on duty by shooting himself in the head with his service revolver on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred during the changeover of naka checking duty.

The injured constable, identified as 28-year-old Bivash Ghosh, was first taken to Bongaon Sub-Divisional Hospital for emergency treatment. After his condition worsened, he was transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for advanced medical care. The hospital authorities have classified his condition as critical.

Bivash Ghosh was a member of the SAP 2nd Battalion under the Gopalnagar police station. Police sources revealed that he had been under medication for a nerve-related health issue for an extended period. The police department has launched an inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the suicide attempt.

Bivash is originally from Bishnupur village under Kotwali police station in Krishnanagar, Nadia district. He joined the West Bengal Police force three years ago. He got married three months ago to Mousumi, who is currently three months pregnant. On the day of the incident, he had visited his home to celebrate Jamai Shashti before returning to duty in the afternoon.

District police officials, including the Bongaon Superintendent of Police, visited the hospital following the incident. The police are continuing their investigation into the case while monitoring the officer’s medical condition closely.
