In a breakthrough, Kolkata Police have busted a fake call center allegedly involved in duping U.S. citizens by posing as representatives of reputed companies like Microsoft and Norton. The raid took place on and before June 3, 2025, at a ground-floor room located at 36/10 Diamond Harbour Road, under the jurisdiction of Parnasree Police Station in South Kolkata.
According to investigators, six individuals were arrested for running an illegal VoIP-based call center. The accused used sophisticated technology to make Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls to residents in the United States. They impersonated customer support agents and gained remote access to the victims' computers. Once inside, they allegedly manipulated the systems to siphon off funds under the guise of resolving software or utility issues.
The scam operated under the pretence of helping victims with technical problems, often citing fake threats like malware or system failure. Victims, unaware of the fraud, were tricked into sharing sensitive banking details or making online payments to the fraudsters.
During the raid, officers seized ₹3,50,500 in ₹500 denomination notes, 5 laptops, 9 mobile phones, and 3 multimedia calling headsets. In addition, evidence of the use of auto-dialers, VoIP software, remote access tools, and other incriminating documents was recovered from the location.
